Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar (meaning Jackal’s Marsh) is a family-owned winery in the Garden Route near Herbertsdale, approximately 40-50km from Mossel Bay. The Jonker family has owned Jakkalsvlei since 1972, with third generation Jantjie Jonker settling on the farm in 2006 and bottling the first wine under the Jakkalsvlei label in 2008. The estate was named after the foxes, jackals and wild cats seen in the surrounding mountains. The 34-61 hectare vineyard is situated 40km from the Indian Ocean at the foot of the Langeberg/Outeniqua Mountains. The combination of southern and northern slopes allows cultivation of 13 different cultivars benefiting from early morning sun, warm days and cool nights. The temperate climate and restrictive soil produce mountain-grown wines of rare depth, longevity and elegance. Annual production is roughly 500,000 litres. The Jakkalsvlei range includes 14 wines: Sauvignon Blanc (24ha dedicated), Chenin Blanc (tropical), River Cuvée white blend, Chardonnay, natural-sweet Moscato range (White, Red & Pink), Pinotage Rosé (dry), Mount Cuvée blend (Top 100 Wines 2024), Pinotage (Coffee Edition – most popular), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Hanepoot dessert wine, and Red Muscadel. The premium Lord Jackal range includes limited quantities with MCC sparkling and Cabernet Franc (Top 100 Wines 2024). The estate has won numerous prestigious awards including three Double Gold Awards for Lord Jackal wines at National Wine Challenge 2024. The Wijnhuis Restaurant serves lunch Wednesday-Sunday with accomplished chefs pairing food with wines, featuring pizzas, cheese platters, slow-cooked lamb neck, crispy pork belly. Picnic baskets available for lawn dining. Family-friendly with playground and spacious lawn. Chef Thomas Potgieter (Hotel School graduate, ex-SA Reserve Bank) prepares weekend gourmet specials. Open daily 10am-4pm (closed Good Friday and Christmas). Bookings essential. Craft beer range includes Jackal Lager and Wolf Ale.
