Boschrivier is a boutique wine estate and family farm situated at the foot of the Klein River Mountain range in the picturesque Akkedisberg Valley on the R326, 17km from Stanford and 35km from Caledon in the beautiful Overberg region. The De Villiers family first set foot on South African soil as part of the French Huguenots in May of 1689, bringing winemaking traditions from France that continued in South Africa. In 1998, the De Villiers family planted the first vines in virgin soils on their family vineyards, including three hectares of Shiraz, six hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, and three hectares of Shiraz bush – planted nestled in the shades of the Klein River Mountains in some of the finest terroirs of the Overberg region. In 2001, the first bottle of Boschrivier Shiraz was produced, and over the past 20+ years, Boschrivier Wines has specialized in producing award-winning Shiraz. In 2013, three new wines were added to the Boschrivier range: Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s main focus remains quality over quantity, with the climate, terroir, quality of grapes used, and expert practices ensuring wines of excellent quality and unique character. The estate’s motto ‘La main a l’oevre’ (hand at work) reflects their hands-on, artisanal approach. Boschrivier is located on two farms that lie at the foot of the Klein River Mountain range, offering one of the most picturesque wine routes in the Western Cape. Visitors are treated to stunning sights of canola fields blooming in spring and vineyards displaying beautiful autumn colors. The estate offers comprehensive facilities including farm accommodation (The Farm House sleeping 9 in 4 bedrooms, and The Cottage sleeping 4 in 2 bedrooms with fully equipped kitchen and outdoor braai), a coffee shop serving breakfasts and light meals, and a tasting room venue that can be booked for functions seating up to 100 guests. Activities on the farm include hiking, birdwatching, swimming in the river, and kayak rentals with life jackets for 4 persons. The farms speak of peace and tranquility, offering a true escape into nature while producing wines that capture the essence of this special terroir.
