Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the historic L’Ormarins farm in the Franschhoek Valley, set on the foothills of the majestic Groot Drakenstein Mountains. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, the farm was taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003, who renamed the company in his brother’s honor. Johann constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and sprawling enterprise that has become one of South Africa’s most impressive and innovative wineries. Today, the Rupert Wines Estate comprises two historic farms: L’Ormarins and Anthonij Rupert Estate, housing two beautifully appointed tasting rooms, four state-of-the-art cellars including gravity-fed facilities and a unique mechanical flywheel (the only one of its kind on the continent), a lovingly tended rose garden, extensive vineyards, the renowned Franschhoek Motor Museum with over 300 vehicles (80 on display at any time), and the Drakenstein Stud Farm. The focus is on terroir-specific wines from an impressive portfolio of four vineyard properties representing the best grape-producing locations in the Western Cape: L’Ormarins in Franschhoek (Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz), Rooderust in Darling, Riebeeksrivier in the Swartland, and Altima in isolated Elandskloof (exceptional Sauvignon Blanc). Each site offers optimum varietal-specific growing conditions with unique soils and climate working harmoniously. Wines are produced under six distinctive brands: the flagship Anthonij Rupert range (premium red wines aged 18-24 months in 100% new French Oak, bottled unfiltered with additional year of bottle aging), Cape of Good Hope (Johann Rupert’s innovative project to save South Africa’s historic vineyards by paying premium prices to preserve old, low-yielding vines – site-specific wines), Terra del Capo (Italian varietal wines including Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese), Protea (varietal wines from younger vines across the four sites), L’Ormarins Méthode Cap Classiques (three sparkling wines), and an annual production of 600 tonnes. The winemaking team led by Cellarmaster Mark van Buuren (with experience at Hartenberg, Guardian Peak, Capaia, David Frost Wines, and Australian wineries) and white wine specialist Dawie Botha (Stellenbosch agricultural degree, international harvest experience in France, California, Tuscany, Napa Valley, Rhône) pursues excellence through minimal intervention, allowing each grape variety’s character to shine. The Terra del Capo Tasting Room and Antipasti Bar offers food-oriented experiences pairing lifestyle brand wines with seasonal antipasti menus and Italian cheese tastings. The Anthonij Rupert Tasting Room provides elegant High Tea experiences amid exquisite mid-nineteenth century art and décor, L’Ormarins MCC and nougat pairings, and various tasting options. Wine club members (R1000 annual purchase threshold) receive discounts, exclusive offers, complimentary tastings, and free entry to the motor museum. The estate also features an Okapi flagship store offering ethically sourced exotic leather accessories from South African artisans.
