Stark-Condé Wines is a boutique, family-owned winery established in 1998 in the dramatic Jonkershoek Valley of Stellenbosch. Founded by Cuban-American winemaker José Condé and his German-Japanese in-laws Hans and Midori Schroder, the estate produces around 6,000 cases annually of premium, hand-crafted wines. The property features 40 hectares of organically-farmed vineyards with steep elevation changes from 150 to 600 metres, creating distinct terroirs ideal for different varietals. Winemaker José Condé, originally a graphic designer, made his first vintage in 1998 which immediately received 5 stars from John Platter. The estate practices traditional winemaking methods including hand sorting, open-tank fermentation, hand punchdowns, basket pressing, and patient maturation in French oak barrels for up to 22 months. All wines are bottled without fining or filtration. The farm boasts some of South Africa’s highest altitude Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, with 80% of the property remaining virgin terrain that mirrors the biodiversity of the neighboring Jonkershoek National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The estate is home to the popular Postcard Café, housed in a stunning setting with a charming Balinese-style tasting room floating on its own island in the middle of the dam. Named a ‘South African First Growth’ by Tim Atkin MW, Stark-Condé has won numerous accolades including Old Mutual Trophy for Most Successful Producer, Best Cabernet Sauvignon, and Best Shiraz.
