M’hudi Wines is South Africa’s first Black-owned and managed wine farm, representing a pioneering story of courage, determination, and the pursuit of dreams. The name M’hudi is derived from the Setswana word ‘Mohudi’ meaning ‘harvester,’ and shares the name with a heroine from a great African story who fled her war-torn village in search of a new beginning. The Rangaka family’s journey into winemaking is equally remarkable – originally from the North West Province of South Africa, the family decided to search for a place where they could spend more quality time together. In 2003, leaving their professional careers behind, Diale and Malmsey Rangaka purchased a farm in Stellenbosch and found themselves making history as the first Black family to acquire a wine farm in South Africa. Despite having no prior knowledge of winemaking when they started, the family has built a successful boutique estate producing premium wines that have earned international recognition. Located on Old Paarl Road in Koelenhof, the estate enjoys views of the Stellenbosch Mountains, Franschhoek, and Table Mountain. The warm valley floor with sandstone soils is cooled by South Easterly winds, creating ideal conditions for viticulture. Working with highly experienced winemakers, M’hudi produces WIETA-accredited wines that have won numerous accolades, including Best in Class at the Drinks Business Masters for their Chenin Blanc. The estate offers wine tastings by reservation, bed and breakfast accommodation on the working farm, event spaces including a renovated tractor shed, and intimate dining experiences. M’hudi walked away with the 2009/2010 Winner of Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the first time this title was awarded to a wine farm.
