DeWaal Wines is a family wine estate in Stellenbosch with nine generations of passionate winemakers. Known for its classic Pinotage wines, DeWaal holds a special place in South African wine history as CT de Waal was the first person to make wine from Pinotage grapes in 1941. The estate, situated in the picturesque Stellenbosch Kloof valley, dates back to 1791 when this historic Cape Dutch homestead was the ‘last outpost’ on the road between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Since 1864, the De Waal family has owned and managed the farm, with the current generation represented by Chris, Pieter and Daniel de Waal. The wines combine Old World finesse with New World abundant fruit, produced from mature vineyards steeped in history that consistently yield deep, rich wines long renowned for their quality. DeWaal is home to the oldest existing Pinotage vineyard in the world, planted in April 1950. The flagship Top of the Hill Pinotage, made from this historic single vineyard block, has been rated by Decanter magazine as one of the Top 10 South African wines. The estate offers three distinct Pinotage styles at different price points: the entry-level easy-drinking Pinotage, the matured and complex CT de Waal Pinotage, and the exquisite Top of the Hill Pinotage. Beyond Pinotage, the estate produces lifestyle white wines and classical, well-balanced red wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and the Signal Rock Cape Blend.
